Since leaks are generally pretty easy to spot (they stain your walls), you probably won’t have a difficult time figuring out if you have some water damage. Drywall is very susceptible to water damage because it’s so absorbent. You will probably see the evidence before you smell it. However, keep in mind that you may just be detecting the tip of the iceberg, because there may be extensive damage to the floors and framework behind your walls. Continuing on our water damage prevention series (see our Avoiding Moisture Damage in Your Kitchen and Inspecting Your Bathroom for Water Damage articles if you missed them) we want to take a look at the utility room - or at least the individual components that go into most utility rooms (as some houses have them scattered everywhere from the attic to the basement).
