1. Where is the Water Coming From?
You first need to discover where the water is leak coming from to prevent any serious water leak damage in your house. There are two types of water leak classifications: water passing through a pipe that surfaces as gradual dripping, and the second being a constant water spray. The gradual drip is actually the more difficult leak to detect because the point of leakage sometimes temporarily dries.
There are a few obvious points of water leaks that you may want to check.
- The pressure relief valve on the hot water tank is notorious for leakage. Occasionally, the valves can be plumbed directly into a drain, and can leak without you knowing. A hissing sound can indicate a leak.
- The dishwasher can also cause water leak damage. Inspect for leaks under the sink where the water supply connects to the hose. In addition, search around the base of the dishwasher for proof of leakage such as soft, warped, or discolored flooring, which can already signify water leak damage.
- Sinks are also widely known for causing water leaks. Look under the sink for leakage from the drainpipes or water supply.
2. Shut Off the Water
To assure that there is no further water leak damage, the water needs to be shut off. Every person in your household needs to be aware of the water shutoff valve location, and know how to open and close it. You need to frequently make sure that the valve is in working order. Also, if you are on vacation, or plan to be away from home for more than a few days, be sure to shut the valve off.
3. Cleanup the Water
Once the water is shutoff, it is time to begin cleanup. Cleaning and water extraction should begin as soon as possible after the water leak is discovered to prevent any additional water leak damage. Towels, rags, mops, and buckets are an ideal starting point for water leak cleanup. You may also want to use a wet/dry vacuum cleaner to soak up as much water and moisture as you can. These vacuums are particularly helpful on tile and wood floors, as well as carpet and upholstered furniture. Clean water and mild detergent can be used to assist with potential water leak damage in other areas. You can also use the assistance of a small scrub brush if warranted.
4. It’s Time to Ventilate
The area damaged by water must be ventilated. This ventilation can be increased by opening windows or doors that are nearby, or setting up a dehumidifier and several fans. By removing the moisture from the air, dehumidifiers greatly decrease the possibility of mold and mildew growth. You should run the fans and dehumidifier until the area is dried thoroughly.
5. Is There Any Other Affected Areas?
It is a good idea to check around your house to make sure the water did not affect any other areas. Did the water leak occur upstairs? Then inspect the downstairs walls and ceilings to ensure that they are not damp or wet. Basement ceiling tiles are commonly a casualty of water leak damage. If you discover that the tiles have been damaged, they must be disposed of and replaced.
