After Water Damage: What is a Moisture Meter?

Posted by at 9:00 AM

Here in Florida, and specifically coastal areas such as Sarasota, water damage is an ever-looming possibility.  Torrential downpours in a short period of time causing flooding, and of course hurricanes, wreak property damage that reaches tens of thousands of dollars.  After water damage events, a moisture meter is often used in order to properly assess the amount of moisture in solid materials, whether it be carpet or wood.  Moisture meters are also a great tool because they are non-destructive, and who wants or needs any more of that after a severe weather event?

Moisture meters work in a variety of ways:

  • Some meters extract a water sample using infrared, microwave techniques or even radio frequencies.
  • Other meters use other measures, such as determining values associated with conductivity (as in electrical energy) like capacitance and resistance.
  • Other moisture meters measure factors associated with meteorology, specifically having to do with humidity.

The Dual Value of a Professional: Expertise and Cost-Efficiency

Whatever the chosen functionality of the meter, it is recommended a water restoration professional be called in due to some of the equipment used.  Why? There are often specialized devices which read the collected data, and expertise with the instrumentation is essential.

Likewise, here in Sarasota, it is especially important after a natural event to seek professional water restoration aid and advice so that you get an accurate appraisal of the water damage, not only to save your structure, baseboards and flooring, but to do so in the most cost-efficient way possible.  Field experience is an invaluable way to make sure you get the biggest bang for your buck, and our professionals are prepared to assist you.
