Don’t Get Burned!  A Few Cautious Steps…

Like any preventive measures, guarding your home and kitchen against fire and fire damage is really about clear foresight.  There’s no magic involved.

  • Keep flammable materials such as dish towels, pot holders and paper towels away from the stove.  Cooking has the potential to get hectic, particularly if you’re preparing a meal for a family.  It can be a process rife with distractions.  Children, ringing phones…even spouses can veer your attention away from the important task at hand.  If there are any flammable materials near a stove eye, it can then easily get bumped up against the coils or flames.  Best to keep them far away from danger.  Also, you can look into pot holders that are made of flame-resistant materials for an extra measure of safety.
  • Keep your appliances, including your stove, well-maintained, cleaned and in proper working order by inspecting them regularly.  It only takes a few minutes to make sure all crumbs are clear from the fire source and the appliance is free from extra grease.
  • Install a smoke detector near the kitchen.  To avoid unnecessary screeching alarms, don’t put it in your kitchen because it’s not unusual to have a little smoke present while you cook.  But it is a great idea to install one near the kitchen to detect actual fires.
  • Roll up your sleeves when you cook.  Should you be wearing sleeves, keep them away from
  • Unplug electric appliances when you’re not using them.  Small appliances like toasters and toaster ovens, Panini makers…they’re all vulnerable to fire.  Keep them unplugged and safely stored when you’re not using them.
  • If you have a gas stove and oven, always use caution when lighting your pilot light.
  • Don’t overfill your pots, pans and fryers with oil.  Grease fires are unfortunately all too common, especially around Thanksgiving when people deep fry their turkeys.  So many fires result from carelessness or neglect when frying foods.  Make sure you’re not a statistic.
  • Keep your stove surface clean.  Never cook on a dirty stove.  The potential for fire under these circumstances statistically spikes.
