How Bad Can My Ceiling Water Damage Get?

Posted by at 9:00 AM

It’s just a little water spot, how bad could it be? Have you ever thought that? Or better yet, I just don’t have the time or money to take care of it, I know there’s a leak but I’m afraid of what to do. Well I’m here to tell you: don’t wait, don’t be afraid, take care of it. Ignoring it won’t make it go away and not dealing with it can have terrible repercussions.

The Truth

Here’s the truth of the matter: if you don’t deal with the leak it will just get worse. If you fix the leak, do you still need to fix the ceiling with water damage? You bet you do! Not just for the cosmetic reasons or the old threat of “if you don’t, your house won’t sell.” How about: it’s part of ownership of your home; how about for your health and the health of your family as a reason why you need to take care of it.

Now I know that sounds a little threatening, but it’s not, it’s just meant to get your attention. Ceilings with water damage can get really bad. For example (and I know you’ve heard of this): mold. In a warm, damp environment mold will grow and grow, it’s aggressive and it feeds on things like the damp sheet rock of your ceiling with water damage. Imagine mold as an open ink pen in the washing machine, first it stains just the shirt the pen was in but then as it moves around it starts to stain everything near it, touching it ruining the entire load of laundry. That’s how bad ceiling water damage can get. The repairs can go into the thousands and thousands of dollars. Those are just the costs to your home, that doesn’t include what can happen for your health. Mold can lead to all kinds of respiratory problems if left unchecked.

Think About The Other Dangers Of Ceiling Water Damage

Your damp ceiling, those little brown spots of water damage, those dark stains spreading across the room, they are only the outer signs of the damage. Remember, you’re only seeing the underside of the sheetrock. The water is on the other side, spreading; you can’t see directly how much damage it is causing. That can lead to ceiling collapse, as well. That’s something that you definitely don’t want to have happen, considering that those repairs are on top of the cleanup—and the scare it’ll give you! On top of mold, that water damage can get into your electrical system of your home, cause a short, and then a fire leading to your home burning down.

Clean Up That Water

So you can see that you ceiling water damage can get really bad. Take care of the ceiling, don’t let the brown spots or stains be ignored, solve the leak then fix the damage cause it can lead to so much that can go wrong. It’s important for your health and it’s important for your home. There’s little excuse to not fix your ceiling, especially when it could grow mold or collapse on your head!
