If you’ve noticed that there’s possible water damage from a leaking pipe in your home, here’s what can happen.
Surprisingly, water damage can escape your notice for a good deal of time. That’s why it’s always important to do occasional inspections of your home in order to be sure that this, or any other type of structural damage or decay, is not happening. Water damage can be stealth for periods up to a year. You might not be able to see it from one room, but when you’re in another room, perhaps a room you don’t frequent, you will be able to spot it right away.
A good example of this is an old friend of mine’s laundry. Sure, he and his wife were in and out of the laundry room daily. However, they failed to notice the increasing water damage behind the washing machine because it was concealed. It was only later that they noticed it when they detected a musty odor emanating from the baseboards behind the machine.
Their laundry room floor is made of wood and, as a result, they ended up having to replace the entire floor. That’s thousands of dollars worth of damage.
We don’t mean to be harsh, but this entire episode could have been prevented with a regular walk-through of the home. In this case Accutech absolutely recommends you call a professional because not only is the work to repair this scenario complex, but also because more extensive damage could be hidden away elsewhere. As water saturates, it spreads.
For instance, in this case, my friend’s water hook-ups were along the garage wall. After they discovered the initial water damage, he looked on the other side of the wall, along the interior of the garage, where he found more damage. Water had essentially destroyed the dry wall all the way through to the other side, causing bubbles and tears to form.
Again, Accutech recommends you call for the aid of a professional. This is a perfect example of how water damage spreads and creates more destruction. You have to question whether there was even more rot behind the wall, hidden, where they couldn’t see it. As it turns out, there was much more rot. Along the interior of the wall, the water damage spread all the way to the roof. As it turned out, there was a leak in the roof almost exactly above where the washing machine hookup was leaking. We understand that this is insult to injury, but these things happen.
If you try to handle a situation like this on your own, you may cause more damage or fail to properly fix the existing problems. It’s crucial to call a professional, or else risk thousands of dollars of damage potentially turning into tens-of-thousands of dollars worth of destruction.
