In these instances, it is necessary to call a water restoration company for help. It is crucial to avoid any contact with the contaminated liquid until the professionals arrive.
Before you begin the extraction, elevate or remove any wood furniture to prevent the stain or finish from releasing and causing permanent stains on the carpet. You will also want to remove any other items that have been harmed or affected by the water such as cushions, pillows, books, or clothing, that may hinder the drying and extraction process in any way.
Here is the first rule of water extraction: you cannot use a regular vacuum cleaner! You must use a carpet water extractor (a wet/dry vacuum cleaner). These are available to rent from many sources, including hardware stores and various retail chains.
To begin water extraction, move the vacuum wand over the affected areas using slow movements to ensure an extensive job. The job is not finished until no more water is suctioned into the extractor tank. It could take a while to completely dry the carpet depending on the amount of saturation the carpet endured. When there is no more water to be extracted, empty the reserve tank, and vacuum over the carpet once more for assurance.
Proper air circulation is essential for a successful carpet restoration project. To accelerate the drying process, you can set up dehumidifiers and industrial-sized fans. Leave these machines operating continually until the capret is dried completely. To ensure that the padding is also dry, continue to run the fans for an additional 24 to 48 hours.
Other Techniques
If after your carpets are dry you notice any spots or stains from the water damage, you can perform a process of deep-cleaning called hot-water extraction. This celebrated method for synthetic carpeting works by spraying a water solution and detergent onto the carpet using low pressure, and then utilizing a wand to vacuum out the debris and solution. High caliber extractors are equipped with a special tool called a “power head” that disturbs the carpet immediately before the solution is taken out. This helps to increase the amount of soil that is extracted.
